About MGO & UMF

MGO and UMF are two different indicators of how many bioactive compounds your raw manuka honey contains. In a way, both are measures of the quality of the honey, but there are some key differences.

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, a natural compound that gives manuka honey its unique properties. The MGO rate is an indicator of quality. The higher the MGO content of honey, the better its quality.

UMF is short for Unique Manuka Factor. It is a system of measurement that covers the MGO count of manuka honey but also factors in some of the other active compounds found only in manuka honey. The UMF number is a standalone measure for both the quality and purity of manuka honey.

What Level of Manuka Honey is Best?

The best type of manuka honey depends on its intended use:

Table grade (MGO 83 - MGO 263): Ideal for daily consumption, in your health chart, beverages, salads, or taken raw.
Moderate grade (MGO 263 - MGO 514): Often referred to as 'therapeutic grade.'
Higher grade manuka honey (MGO 514 - MGO 1200): Contains higher MGO and UMF levels.

MGO and UMF - Parity Chart

Here is a rough parity chart to help you convert and determine the quality of manuka honey:

UMF 5 = MGO 83
UMF 10 = MGO 263
UMF 15 = MGO 514
UMF 20 = MGO 829
UMF 25 = MGO 1200

Background

The Manuka tree, also called the Tea Tree (Leptospermum Scoparium), is a little evergreen shrub tree with sweet-scented flowers that bloom briefly in spring and summer. It only grows in New Zealand and some parts of Australia.

Manuka honey by Nature’s Blends is a monoflower honey, meaning the bees gather nectar only from the manuka blooms. This gives our honey its unique flavor, texture, and nutrient profile.
